Student and Professional Journalism Organizations Editor’s Note: These are unsettled times in newsrooms. Doing more with less is part of the every day drill of feeding the 24/7 broadcast beast.  And, as the news paradigm shifts to digital delivery and social media, you wonder what’s around the corner.  There’s a sense of uncertainty about the future and it carries over into the J-schools and journalism departments.  Students naturally wonder, will the jobs be there when I graduate?  How will the news industry change? Will my skills fit?  In an effort to answer some of those question - or at least generate discussion -  I think it’s important to include a Student Center in the247newsroom.com site. As the site develops, I hope to include more student-related content and discussion.  If you have an idea, comment or thought to pass along, please drop me an email.  I can be reached at editor@the247newsroom.com, or click the icon

Students in the247Newsroom Spotlight South Africa: Continuing Reports by Temple University Students  In this week’s student spotlight is a worthy journalism project out of Temple University in Philadelphia, and its Journalism Department, where I was on the faculty there and Director of its MURL program. The current co-director of MURL, Chris Harper, told me about a unique program the Journalism Department is running in South Africa.  A team of Temple University students are working in South Africa with Professor Shenid Bhayroo of the Department of Journalism to produce a series of multimedia stories. It has always been my feeling that total immersion is the best way to teach, particularly journalism.  The Temple team will spend five weeks traveling throughout the country, producing stories from various cities and towns and comparing life in South Africa with that in Philadelphia. Professor Bhayroo is a longtime journalist in South Africa. He worked for a variety of news outlets, including the South African Broadcasting Corp. The trip is part of the study-away program of the Department of Journalism at Temple University. Here’s a link to more about the program and Temple’s multimedia lab.  The team’s reflections can be found here at http://sites.temple.edu/shenid/category/travelogue/  If you have a student journalism project worth noting, drop me a note at editor@the247newsroom.com Feeding the 24/7 News Cycle
